About your personal data and Data Protection

In this Privacy Notice, “we” "us" and “our” refers to Tesco Personal Finance plc, trading as Tesco Bank and part of the Tesco Group (www.tescoplc.com/about-us).

This privacy notice summarises how we will use your personal data once you have registered for Refer a friend. Refer a friend and the rewards process are administered by our agents Optimise Media (UK) Limited (Optimise), on behalf of Tesco Bank. For the purposes of the personal data protection laws Tesco Bank are a data controller, and Optimise are our data processer. Further details about how Optimises use your personal data can be found in their Privacy Notice.

What the law says about processing

The law requires us to tell you how we process your personal data. “Processing” is a legal term but means anything we do with your personal data, such as collecting, gathering, obtaining, administering, adapting, keeping and deleting your personal data.

We collect and keep data about you

We collect details about you, your transactions and any personal data provided throughout your time as a Tesco Bank customer. This includes the personal data you give via our website or over the phone, information we get from third parties and information you submit when you applying for our Online Banking and Mobile Banking App services. This personal data includes your name, address, email addresses and any emails, letters and telephone conversations provided.

How will Optimise and Tesco Bank use my personal data for Refer a friend?

We will only use your personal data to contact you about Refer a friend in the following ways:

Optimise will collect and use the first name, last name and email address of all participants which will be used to enable Optimise to issue emails to:

  • confirm referral registrations
  • keep you updated on any progress regarding the referral
  • for the notification and sending of rewards
  • respond to any queries you may have about Refer a friend

Where you select Tesco Clubcard points as your chosen reward Optimise will also collect a valid Clubcard number on behalf of Tesco Bank. Tesco Bank will then use your Clubcard number to allocate you your points.

We will only ask for necessary personal data unless we tell you otherwise

We will ask for personal data that is essential for us to know so that we can provide our products or services to you. If we ask for personal data that is not essential, we will explain why and tell you the consequences if you do not provide us with the personal data.

How long will you hold my information for Refer a friend?

Any personal data held by Optimise for the Refer a friend promotion will only be used for this purpose as agreed with Tesco Bank and will be anonymised once the reward has been issued and all related administration has been completed.

If you currently are, or subsequently become an opted in customer of Tesco Bank marketing, Tesco Bank will hold a record of your participation in the Refer a friend promotion, and may use this information to tailor future marketing messages we send you.

We will not send you marketing information because you registered for Refer a friend. Refer a friend is a standalone promotion which is separate of your Tesco Bank marketing preferences and so registering for Refer a friend will not opt you into any marketing which you have not previously agreed to.

Transferring data outside of the EEA.

We may transfer and store your personal data outside the European Economic Area (EEA), but we will ensure that appropriate security measures are taken. You can find more information on sending your personal data outside the EEA in your Product Privacy Notice and online.

Cookies and security tokens

Just as cookies and similar online identifier technologies play a crucial part in making websites function correctly (shopping, logging in to banks etc.) they are also very important to digital advertising. Without them there is no effective means to show users adverts that are relevant to their interests. It would also often be impossible for businesses to measure the effectiveness of advertising campaigns and the budgets that are spent on them.
